This last Sunday my good wife (and our sister-in-law, her brother and some other people we know) ran the London Marathon.

We all went down to watch and they all did brilliantly.

Mega proud of them all 🙂

She was feeling it yesterday – it was hard work!

26.2 miles.

Did you know that 10 stone person burns a little over 100 calories per mile ran?

2,620 calories over a marathon.

At 15 stone it would be 3,930 cals.

Those numbers aren’t mega precise.

But they won’t be too far from the truth.

There is approximately 3,500 calories or energy stored in a pound of body fat.

See above for that accuracy.

So a 10 stone person running a marathon would, essentially, burn less than one pound of body fat.

All else being equal.

A fifteen stone person a little over a pound.

You’d hit the exact one pound mark if you were 13 stone and 5lbs.

That’s a lot of running to burn a pound of body fat, isn’t it?

Not really worth it, is it?

As we’ve mentioned before, exercise is a spectacularly ineffective way to lose weight.

Imagine if you had to run 14 marathons to lose a stone.

Whilst not eating any more.

I know I wouldn’t bother.

What would you rather do…………

Run a marathon each week or…………

Create a 500 calories a day (average) deficit?

Not saying the second option is easy.

But it’s waaaaayyyyyy easier than the first, no?

Exercise is great for health, fitness, strength, endurance, mood, energy levels and much more.

And it can be the ‘icing on the cake’ for weight loss.

But, it’s not your bigger win.

Any of our contemporaries that try and sell you exercise for ‘fat burning’ are probably best avoided.

Actually achieve and maintain the results they want………

Without having to live like a monk and do exercise they hate………
