Those of you that are Facebook friends with me may have seen that last Friday the family and I missed a flight.

We were returning from a short break in Stockholm.

And there was a few contributing factors to missing the flight, but the main one that made the big difference was that we’d underestimated the distance to the gate.

There are a number of lessons to be learned and / or shared from this.

Some of which I will share in upcoming blogs as you may find them useful.

The first, and arguably most obvious one, is that we should have got all the way to the gate and then used whatever time was left to get food, etc.

Working backwards from the final result to successfully plan the preceding steps.

As is beneficial in all areas of life.

But what we often do is have that final result in mind and just kind of leave it to chance that we will do the right steps at the right time to get there.

Forever telling ourselves “I know what I need to do, I just need to do it”.

Having a specific result in mind……..

Working backwards to decide the constituent steps that will lead to that……..

And planning and scheduling them……..

Means it’s way more likely to then happen.

“Lose some weight” isn’t much of a goal.

“Losing a stone over the next 2 months by averaging an 800 calorie a day deficit by being in a 1,200 calorie day deficit Monday to Friday to allow an extra couple of thousand calories over the weekend” is a better one.

Planning what at least a high proportion of those meals would look like at the start of the week and making arrangements for that to be as easy as possible (click and collect, etc) is a better plan still.

“Exercise more” isn’t much of a goal.

“Do 13 workouts a month by putting X O Clock on A-B-C days in my diary and making plans and arrangements for my other commitments around that” is much more likely to happen.

Same with any goals for work.

A side hustle.

A new business venture.

Our personal life.

Any other logistics.

Define the final result.

Work backwards to define the steps needed to be taken to lead there.

Plan and schedule the most effective and efficient way to take these steps.

Much love,

P.S. Helping people set specific plans and holding them accountable to them each week is a massive part of why we get so many successes. When you’re ready for actual support, real accountability and life changing results (instead just renting access to exercise equipment), then you’ll find a risk free trial of that at www.myrise.co.uk/apply
