I’ve mentioned recently that I’ve been doing a lot more running than I usually do.

I’m not a big fan of running to be honest.

And it’s not really growing on me.

But I’ve got a few goals this year that require me to be better at running.

I’ve just passed 100 miles ran so far this year.

Which is probably more than in the previous decade.

I track all my runs on the MapMyRun app on my phone.

Partly to help me keep track.

Partly as I’m in a ‘challenge’ on there with my wife, her brother and his wife.

I say challenge………..

I think MapMyRun must be sexist as it only seems to record mine and Tom’s runs 😉

I was looking at the split times for one of the runs the other day.

You know – the time each mile took.

As you would expect, there was some variance in speed.

Some miles ran faster or slower than others.

Sustaining training

Mainly down to the ‘circumstance’ of each mile – inclines, surface and so on.

Pretty obvious that when it was a good road with a nice downhill incline, I’d go faster than up a grassy hill.

And overall, getting slightly slower over time – the latter miles slower than the early ones.

Sustaining Training

A good analogy for our journeys on ye olde health, fitness and weight loss journey.

Circumstances will dictate a change in speed.

Some weeks we will be able to ‘open up’ and sprint.

Some will seem like we’re crawling on our hands and knees.

From the very start through to nearing our goal, the speed of progress will probably slow.

But we don’t need to stop.

We don’t need to wander off home only to restart the run at some later date.

Slow down and speed up (check this page to have a no-pressure look around RISE in Macclesfield if you like the sound of an approach that accepts this happens rather than making you feel bad when you don’t do 5 workouts that week. If you need help sustaining training, we offer a common sense approach).

Maybe even pause (standing still, not ambling backwards).

#dontstop

Much love,
