I mentioned two days ago that I’d cover “owning” emotional states today.

As I’m sure you’ve been on tenterhooks, I will continue.

It’s a standard phrase nowadays so to talk about “my depression”.

Or “my anxiety”.

“That’s triggering my anxiety”

“That’s not good for my depression”

And, before I’m misquoted, I’m fully aware that some people feel emotions like depression and anxiety more frequently and / or to a greater degree than others do.

But the key thing to remember is that they are emotions.

Not fundamental ‘conditions’.

They’re not binary.

It’s not something that we either have or don’t have.

Not black or white.

Emotions that we all feel and that change over time.

Creating ownership over them changes how we see them.

Makes us feel much more a victim of our circumstances.

The difference in perception between “I have anxiety” and “I’m feeling anxious” is huge.

As is “my depression” to “I’m feeling depressed “.

They become something that we feel we can do something about.

They won’t stop (no emotions will).

But there may be things that we can do that effect how frequently and deeply we feel those emotions.

As always, easier said than done.

But doesn’t mean we can’t do some of it.

Doesn’t mean it isn’t worth it.

And doesn’t mean that labelling them as something we fundamentally ‘have’ probably won’t help.

Much love,

Jon ‘Chemical Romance’ Hall
