So, it’s the 1st of January.
The day that many will make New year’s resolutions.
And, over the years, I’ve been a bit back on forth on these.
For many years saying what most Fitness Professionals said that “they don’t work”.
Because the research shows that most resolutions only last a few weeks.
But then more and more over the last few years, I’ve come to realise that January can be a good time to set some plans.
It’s a relatively quiet and easy month for most after Christmas.
So maybe it’s more about setting plans at the start of the year rather than making resolutions.
And I’ve just come to another realisation.
Part of the problem with New Year’s resolutions is that final word.
Resolution.
We’re “resolving” to do something.
Because let’s be honest, when we resolve to do something it’s not really something that we want to do.
We’ve resigned ourselves to the fact that we’re going to have to do it in.
In our entire life have we ever made a resolution to do something that we just wanted to do?
How we ever made a resolution to watch a TV program that we’re enjoying?
Or to see our friends?
Or anything else that we like and value.
The answer, of course, is no.
Resolutions, much like willpower, are for things that we don’t want to do.
So might we instead be better off making plans for the New Year that we do want to do.
Not necessarily because we massively enjoy the processes themselves.
But for the benefits that would they bring.
We just want to feel happier and have more energy.
We’re don’t have to resolve ourselves to that.
Same for a body we like the look and feel of more.
More confidence and better mood and mental health.
We just want those things.
So maybe what we can do over the coming days is start to set some plans to make the things that need to be done for those benefits as easy as possible.
Schedule them in.
Get the buy-in and assistance of other people whose behaviours can influence them.
Choose to be realistic with the amounts and the versions that we can do of each of these things.
Remembering that ‘knowingly suboptimal and done’ always beats ‘theoretically better and deferred’.
So, no resolutions today.
But maybe some plans to achieve the things that are important to us.
Much love,
Jon ’12 Victoria St, Chapel Langley’ Hall
