How many things have you done in your life that you didn’t really want to do?

Quite a few I should imagine.

Whether it be things at work, stuff to do with friends and family, health and fitnessy things…….

There will be plenty of things you you do / have done that you’d probably rather have not.

Now I should imagine you used one of two approaches to dealing with this:
1. Saw it as something you didn’t really have a choice over. A non negotiable.

My 40-45 minute school run for two of our kids is, frankly, a ball ache.

But I don’t really have much, choice, do I?

So I just get on with it.

I’m sure there’s plenty you put up with because it pays the bills, keeps someone else happy, just needs doing, etc.
2. You use willpower to make yourself do it.

Forcing yourself to eat a certain way.

Or to do exercise you find boring, monotonous and, well, just painful.

Gritting your teeth over some nonsense at work.
Option 1 we can do forever if we choose, can’t we?

I’ll be doing that school run five times a week for 12 more years.

Option 2 has a limited shelf life, no?

You’ll eventually explode at your boss.

And / or hand your notice in.

You’ll miss a workout or two.

Or eat some rubbish.

And then, one day, realise it’s been months since you last went to the gym or had a solid week of eating well most of the time.

When we rely on willpower and motivation, it’s………

Not a question of if, but when………

We will stop.

Willpower and motivation can be useful things to get us started on something.

But they are ‘finite resources’.

They’ll run low / out.

They alone won’t get you where you’d like to get to.

Finding things you enjoy………

Or, at least find tolerable.

Making things non-negotiable because the benefits they bring outweigh the disadvantages.

That’s where long term success lies 🙂

Much love,

Jon ‘Q&A’ Hall and Matt ‘T&A’ Nicholson

P.S. Long term success is kinda ‘what we do’. The 8 week challenges are a great way to start, and there’s no commitment after that. But they’re really for people who see this as Step 1 of the rest of the life, but don’t want to be tied into anything –> myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting.
