In the 2002 episode of The Simpson ‘The Old Man and the Key’, there’s a bit where Grandpa Simpson raises his fist at a cloud.

His picture is captured and a front page headline appears “Old man yells at cloud”.

Being annoyed at the weather is a very British and, let’s be honest, very pointless pastime.

The weather is what it is.

No amount of comment on it will change it.

Last summer, Matt and I went on a workshop with a lady called Byron Katie.

And Matt’s really into her stuff.

Some of it I sometimes feel is a ‘step too far’ for me.

But there is one phrase she often uses that I love.

Some variation on “All human suffering comes from arguing with reality”

From wishing that what is, wasn’t.

Or vice versa.

Thinking it’s not fair that we can’t “eat what we want”

Being annoyed that our friend seems to “have a better metabolism”

Not liking that improving our health often takes more time, effort and / or money (although we do everything we can to help people minimise these –> myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting).

Wishing there was more time in the day.

Wanting certain people to be more helpful or, at least, less of hindrance.

All like yelling at a cloud.

What is is.

If we can change it, we have two choices.

Change it or don’t change it.

We may decide that changing it is not worth the effort.

That’s everyone’s prerogative.

But…….

If we can’t change it……….

Then we’re arguing with reality.

We’re shouting at that cloud.

And when we realise this and start to let these things go……..

We free up so much energy and focus for the things we can change 🙂

Much love,

Jon ‘Logan’ Hall and Matt ‘And the sea’ Nicholson

P.S. Point each for those middle names 😉
