Apparently there are over one million words in the English language.
I say apparently because I have not counted them and I have no intention of doing so.
Supposedly, the average person uses about 10,000 words on a regular basis.
And the average Category B prisoner uses 600.
So for the vast majority of us reading this, there will be something like 990,000 words “going spare”.
So I’m pretty confident that in amongst those words, we could find some other words to use that would serve us better.
Ways of describing the current situation that still feel true……….
But set us up for thinking about it in a better way.
Because there’s no point using phraseology that just doesn’t ring true.
That’s why starring in a mirror repeating mantras such as “You’re a tiger. Go get ’em champ” rarely works.
Feels fake and forced.
But we could make changes along the lines of the following and see how that helps us approach things;
“I’m too busy” —> “I’ve got a lot on so need to plan well”
“I’ve got a bad metabolism” –> “My energy requirements are what they are. I just need to make sure I’m in maintenance or deficit”
“I don’t have time to exercise” —> “I only have X minutes a week to exercise so need to use them wisely”
“I can’t do this” —> “This is hard, but I’ll get there with time”
“I’m not good at this” —> “I’ll get better with practice”
“I’m tired” —> “I could do with more energy” (increased energy is a massive part of what our guys get. It’s www.myrise.co.uk/apply if you’d like some of that)
And so on.
None of these examples probably involve using words outside of our normal vocabulary, to be honest.
But I’m pretty confident that, in the million or so words available to you, there are ways that you could change how you describe certain situations that are more likely to set you up for success.
Much love,
