If you’re Facebook friends with me, you may have saw I went to a ‘leaving party’ last Saturday night.

One of my eldest son’s two best friends returned to Australia yesterday.

He and his family are English but lived there for a number of years, returned to England two years ago and, for various reasons, are back to Oz now.

As a leaving present, Oli and I has chosen an acrylic block photo frame with a picture of the two boys in.

One copy for each of them.

It’s a picture of them stood with their raft at last year’s raft race.

We’d decorated it up Rambo style.

And they were the ‘Rambo Rafters’.

Across the top of the pictures it read ‘Rambo Rafters Forever’.

And had a little tear in my eye as they opened them and do now thinking about it.

He’s a lovely boy and he, and his family, will be sorely missed.

Now, Oli and I decided on the block idea about a month ago.

I had ages to get some ordered off eBay or somewhere similar.

But, you guessed it, I didn’t.

I got to last Friday and I’d still not sorted it.

So I went to a local photography shop to get the acrylic block frames.

And, you guessed it again, they were twice as much as they were on the internet.

Not a massive amount of money, but I’d made it a greater cost and effort by leaving it till the last possible minute.

Which is often the way, isn’t it.

If we put a bit of thought into things in advance, they can often end up being quicker and / or cheaper.

Leave till the last minute and they’re often more effort and / or more expensive.

Or we end up with something less good.

Same with food.

Spending 20 minutes on a Sunday evening to plan some of the weeks meals and order a click and collect can save 10 minutes each lunch time and a bit of money each day.

Or stop us getting to ‘Hungry O Clock’ and going for the most convenient option (canteen, garage, coffee shop, etc) which is rarely good (and often more expensive).

Cooking a bit more while we’re already cooking and saving it for some other time in the week will take a minute or two longer to save a lot more than that at some other point.

If putting the time in ahead of time doesn’t save time or money or make better choices easier, then don’t bother.

But if it does (and it usually does), then why not?

Much love,

Jon ‘First Blood’ Hall and Matt ‘The Savage Hunt’ Nicholson
