I was chatting to one of our ninjas the other day.

 

Let’s call him James.

 

Because that’s his name.

 

James was running me through his eating.

 

He’d worked out he was averaging 1,800 cals per day.

 

But his assessment recommended 2,200.

 

“Should I be eating more?” he asked me.

 

“Only if you want to” I replied.

 

Despite what some FitPros will tell you, there is no benefit (from a weight loss perspective to eating more).

 

By which we mean eating the same stuff, but increasing portion size or throwing some extra snacks or meals in.

 

They’ll tell you it “speeds up you metabolism” or “the you have to eat more to help you burn fat”.

 

They are wrong.

 

Neither of these things make any sense.

 

I don’t even know what speeding up a metabolism means.

 

Whilst it’s true that people often find they can eat a greater volume of food when with us then they have before (check myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting if you like the sound of that) ………….

 

This is a combination of them substituting lower calorie density, usually less processed, more natural foods…………

 

And exercising more.

 

Not the same as eating more of the same.

 

If someone is happy at lower calorie intake then some formula gives them, that will just mean (all else being equal) that they’ll get there quicker.

 

And that they’ll build a bit of a buffer in.

 

If James upped his intake to 2,200 calories a day………..

 

And then went a bit nuts at the weekend and had, let’s say 4,000 cals (easily done), then he’d be in a surplus.

 

If he average 1,800 a day for 5 days, he’d have 2,000 in the bank come the weekend.

 

Not advocating that, but if he / you are going to do it anyway, why not work around it?

 

We can wrap this up in whatever fancy name we like – intermittent fasting, the 5:2 diet and so on.

 

To me, it’s just averaging out over a week.

 

Putting a bit more focus into what we’re doing and not eating for the sake of it when it’s relatively easy.

 

So you have some flexibility when it’s a bit harder.

 

Essentially, the biggest deficit (however you interpret that) that you find tolerable (ie: are fairly happy to do and don’t feel the need to ‘rebel’ against) more often than not so that you either;

 

A Get there quicker or (more likely);

 

B Have that buffer to cover the less good days
