You seen the episode of Friends ‘The One Where Monica Gets a Roommate’?

Ross is talking to Joey about his separation from Wife #1 Carol.

He laments that there might only be one woman out there for him and that’s it.

Joey doesn’t agree and tries an analogy of ice cream flavours;

“That’s like saying there’s only one flavor of ice cream for you. Let me tell you something, Ross. There’s lots of flavors out there. There’s Rocky Road, and Cookie Dough, and Bing. Cherry Vanilla. You could get them with jimmies, or nuts, or whipped cream”.

To which Ross replies “I honestly don’t know if I’m hungry or horny”.

And Chandler, as he invariably does, hits the punchline of “Stay out of my freezer”.

The difference between hunger and horniness is one we can probably mostly differentiate between, I assume?

But hunger and other stuff?

Not always.

We often tell ourselves that we’re eating because we’re hungry.

When it’s, at the very least, not the entirety of the story.

We may be eating because we’re;

  • Part way through a meal and in the habit of finishing it
  • Bored
  • Sad
  • Tired
  • Angry
  • Thirsty
  • At a time of day we’re used to eating
  • Not good at saying no when people offer us stuff
  • And much more!

We always say that going hungry on a regular basis isn’t the way to get results (check myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting to find out more about what we do if you like the sound of an approach that isn’t about going hungry all the time).

It requires willpower to withstand that.

And willpower is a finite resource.

If you’re hungry, eat.

But, if you’re eating for other reasons……….

At least be aware of it.

That’s a start.

Doesn’t automatically solve it.

But if we’re looking at the right thing, we stand a way better chance of changing that.

Whether that being addressing portion size so we get enough, but not too much.

Looking at meal timings and volume distribution.

Or doing things to minimise how bored, sad, tired or angry we get.

Or finding other things that help with the above, but don’t take us away from our goals.

Or drinking water first and seeing if we’re still hungry 5 minutes later.

From our experience, regularly going hungry isn’t the answer.

But eating for reasons other than stopping or pre-empting hunger definitely isn’t either!

Much love,

Jon ‘Hangry’ Hall and Matt ‘Ningry’ Nicholson
