Another way of re-evaluating the reasons for our choices is to reframe them in another way that is equally correct, but maybe sounds less appealing.
We may then choose to replace the old way of seeing things.
We may choose to keep it as we’re happy with it.
No right or wrong.
Re-evaluating Why I Use Alcohol
Here’s one about alcohol.
In our society, we use often use alcohol to help us unwind.
To relax.
I did regularly for 20 years until I went through a bit of a change recently.
Until I came to realise it didn’t really relax me.
It was sedation.
A temporary respite from how we are feeling.
But not a cure.
Would I have felt the same about ‘relaxing’ if I was popping a pill to do it instead?
Probably not. Re-evaluating our choices might or might not change our habits.
Justifying and Re-Evaluating Our Choices
We often give other justifications.
Health benefits, for example.
There, arguably, is some to certain alcoholic drinks in certain doses.
Probably about the same as a multi-vitamin pill.
Wine to relax could be seen as taking a sugar cube (or several), a Xanax and a multi vit to relax.
And thinking about it that way changed my view on it.
I now meditate regularly.
Not so much to relax me now.
It stops me getting stressed in the first place.
And I still have some wine (and other alcohol).
Not to de-stress or unwind though – just as a fun part of something I’m doing
Way less now the way I see it has changed.
But, as always, there’s no right or wrong.
Just sharing with you a way of thinking that has benefited me.
Use it as you wish 🙂
Much love,
Jon ‘Xerox’ Hall and Matt ‘Xabi Alonso’ Nicholson
