Got a brain teaser for you.

Take a chess board.

Scrub that – imagine you have a chess board.

A big one.

You place one grain of rice of the first square.

Two on the second one.

Four on the third.

Eight on the fourth.

And so on.

Doubling the number of grains placed on each square as you go.

How much rice do you have in the end?

Rather than a number, try and guess in bowls full.

Or car fulls.

Or lorry fulls.

Or maybe country fulls?

The answer is…………………

Enough to cover India to a depth of 3 foot.

18,446,744,073,709,551,615 grains.

Slow weight gain

A lot isn’t it?

More than you thought I would imagine.

More than I thought.

Us humans aren’t as good at big numbers as we like to think.

Slow weight gain

Which is one of the reason our weight can slowly sneak up over years.

How much weight would you gain if you had a flump (those tiny marshmallow things) a day over what you needed for a decade?

2 1/4 stone.

Just from a flump.

What about from a Mars Bar?

Over 19 stone.

Not signalling out flumps or Mars Bars.

The same would happen with excess salad consumption (although eating 19 stone of fat worth of salad would be bloody hard going).

And I know the numbers behind these sums are open to debate, but the concept is there and they won’t be too far from the truth. It’s slow weight gain, but it stacks up.

But it’s just a little reminder how;

A. Weight can gradually sneak on if we don’t pay enough attention to what we’re eating and;

B. How it doesn’t have to be that big an anjustment to drop that weight – small, maintainable changes add up over time
