Take two groups of people.

Go, on I’ll wait………….

…………..

If you don’t fancy doing that, I can tell you what happened when someone else did this, if that helps?

Get both groups to do the same workout.

Tell Group A it is an “endurance” workout.

Tell Group B it is a “fat burning” workout.

Then leave them all in a room with some water and pretzels (other food items are available)………….

And record how much they consume.

What do you reckon happens.

You’ve probably guessed.

The “fat burners” eat more.

Between 37 and 96% more in different tests.

So some groups nearly doubled how much they ate at the first chance because they believed they had done a “fat burning” workout.

And these experiments didn’t even look at food intake later in the day.

People are often surprised at my answer when they ask something like “How many calories do I burn in one of your sessions?”

Or “Is this good fat burning exercise?”

And I answer with “Hard to say, but I’d go for none”.

Or “No”.

Of course, calories of energy will be used up.

They are constantly and more so when we move more.

But not as much as you might think.

And, as both these experiments and our own experience, shows…………

The more we think of exercise as fat or calorie burning………..

The more we eat later.

Getting a take out and a bottle of wine on the way home from a workout because “I’ve earned it” is not an uncommon thought process (other “treats” are available).

Probably 1,500 to 2,000 calories there (and a good thousand more than we might have had other wise)…………..

After we’ve used 300 to 500 calories in a workout.

And probably would’ve used 100 to 200 if we were asleep.

Exercise can, of course be the proverbial ‘icing on the cake’ (excuse the poor choice of proverb).

It can be the extra that gets us over the finishing line (or gets us there quicker).

But we always find it works better for most people to exercise for health, fitness, energy, stamina, focus, mental clarity, shape, definition, mood and much more.

And to eat better for weight loss (check myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting if you like the sound of all of the above).

Much love,

Jon ‘First the’ Hall and Matt ‘Witch’ Nicholson

P.S. Yesterday’s middle names – mid 90s ‘graduates’ of the WCW PowerPlant training facility. Obscure, I know 😉
