Imagine you’ve volunteered for a test.

You’re in a room filling out a survey and smoke begins pouring into the room through an air vent.

What do you do?

Leave, of course.

75% of people usually exit the room and tell someone about it.

What do you do if you’re in that room with two others.

The smoke comes in and they don’t move.

You’re only 38% likely to get up now.

The same can be seen in tests where people hear a woman falling down heavily on the other side of a room divider.

Most go round to help when on their own.

Few do when there’s others there.

It’s human nature to look at what others are doing for signs as to what we should do.

By ourselves we make a much more independent decision.

No one else is rushing to help?

It’s probably ok.

Everyone else eating cake at break time?

You’re more likely to do that.

No one around and you’d probably have something else.

You’re out with your mates and they’re all on the beers?

You’re more likely to do that.

You’d otherwise find it much easier to have a G&T or something else with lower impact on the waistline.

It’s not so much ‘peer pressure’ as ‘peer influence’.

What other people do massively affects what we choose to do.

And, as always, knowing that is that essential Step One.

Realising that means we can expose ourselves to it less.

Avoid (or at least reduced the frequency of) those situations that might effect us.

And / or strengthen our resolve to act in what we know to be the best way for us, when faced with those situations.

Remember those people staying sat in a room full of smoke.

And don’t be like them!

Much love,

Jon ‘Robinson’ Hall and Matt ‘And The Bandit’ Nicholson

P.S. One of the reasons we get such great success rates with our clients is supportive environment where that peer influence helps us make those better decisions –> check out myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting for more info 🙂
