So, the World Cup is over.

 

A great performance by the England team.

 

Got further than most expected.

 

Some quality football and great effort all round.

 

What was nice to see was the reaction when we lost to Croatia on Wednesday.

 

Nearly all positive and happy.

 

The boys have done good!

 

A marked change from most of our tournament exits.

 

Players slated in the press and on social media.

 

Invariably a lot of comments along the lines of “They just didn’t want it badly enough……..”

 

Which I never really get.

 

For whatever faults there have been / are in our domestic game it doesn’t strike me that the 11 guys on the pitch aren’t bothered if they win or not.

 

I don’t know them personally, but I would imagine every single England player (particularly in recent decades) grew up wanting nothing more than to lift the World Cup with their country.

 

They’ll have dreamed about it as little boys and worked hard every day since to get to that point.

 

They’ll want it waaaayyyyyy more than any armchair pundit who’s never played a competitive game does.

 

Getting paid lots might cause certain issues.

 

But stopping players wanting to win the World Cup isn’t one of them, in my opinion.

It’s like when people say the same of people who struggle to lose weight.

 

“They just don’t want it badly enough………”

 

Maybe true in some cases.

 

From my experience, usually not.

 

Most people really do want to lose the weight.

 

For some they want nothing more.

 

But, for various reasons, it’s not happening for them.

 

Weight loss effort

 

Sure, we can boil down weight loss to energy in vs. energy out.

 

That’s the foundations that has to underpin weight loss.

 

But, weight loss and gain is multi factorial.

 

And just telling people to, essentially, try harder at something they’ve struggled with before is rarely the answer.

 

Jamming the foot on the accelerator harder and harder……….

 

Doesn’t do a great deal when the brakes are still on.

 

Whether those brakes are mindset, habit and thought process related.

 

Or to do with relationships and history with food.

 

Upbringing.

 

Genetics.

 

Medication.

 

Choice of approach.

 

And so on.

 

Releasing these brakes, even a little, starts to mean the same amount of ‘effort’ starts to yield greater results.

 

Telling football players they “don’t want it badly enough” doesn’t help them play better.

 

And telling people struggling to lose weight the same doesn’t help them. Questioning their weight loss effort.

 

Figure out what brakes are holding you back.
