I mentioned on Tuesday that I’m doing the Wilmslow half marathon on Sunday.
When you work in fitness, people assume you’ve always been good at sports and in great shape.
Probably the case for most FitPros, but not for me.
I was a fat kid.
Came 101st out of 104 boys in my first year school cross country.
We were supposed to call it Year 7 by then, but refused because we were bad ass and we were the last year with the old school tie design (represent!).
I only beat Rob Staley, Phil Kirkham and Andrew Walker.
The ‘big lads’ of our year.
By the third year I came 30 something.
I’d grown about a foot in a year and became quite skinny.
Till I discovered beer and got fat again.
Anyhow, I’m not a natural runner.
I’m aiming to get sub two hours as that seems a nice round number and within what I’m capable of.
Have to average 9:13 per mile.
My wife and kids will be there cheering me on.
I know I’ll be fine for the first few miles, when I pass them part way round and for the last few miles.
When the ‘race’ will be won or lost……….
Is when no one is watching.
Those middle miles where, apart from random strangers running near me, I’m on my own.
More than that it was won and lost over the last few months when I was doing my training runs.
While no one was watching.
It will have been won and lost by me doing what needs to be done at the points where it kinda doesn’t seem to matter as much.
Exercise Preparation
Much like your journey to your goals.
Won or lost when no one is watching.
By the time you get to ‘exercise o’clock’ the game has already been won or lost.
It was won or lost when you scheduled your week. In your exercise preparation.
It was won or lost the night before when you did or didn’t prep and pack your workout gear.
By the time it comes to ‘food o clock’ it’s already been won or lost.
When you did your weekly shop.
When you planned ahead for the coming week (or didn’t).
When you did or didn’t do things to protect your mood and energy levels (sleep, hydrate, de-stressing techniques, etc).
All while no one was watching.
The bits when people are watching that are relatively easy to get right.
It’s when there’s just you and it ‘kinda doesn’t seem to matter’ that we make the decisions that the game is won or lost by.
Always worth remembering 🙂
Much love,
Jon ‘Wonderwall’ Hall and Matt ‘Lost in translation’ Nicholson
P.S. 11 days now to the next intake. Your ‘game’ (or that of a friend) could be won or lost by whether you decide to take this next step or not –> myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting Come to the informal, no-obligation meeting at RISE in Macclesfield and ask any questions you have.
