It seems to be a never ending argument.

Which form of exercise is best.

Is it interval training?

Is it steady state?

Tabata?

Is is Meta-Fit, Crossfit, various types of classes and so on.

Proponents of each pointing out why theirs is superior.

There’s a great phrase to remember when comparing them from a weight loss perspective that I’ll come to in a minute.

If you’re looking at it from a strength, fitness, etc perspective then that’s a different question.

And largely depends on what you’re wanting your body to be able to do.

And I’ll cover that in tomorrow’s blog.

The phrase to help you compare exercise options from a weight loss perspective………..

“Work matched”

When you compare weight loss from the same volume of work (total physical effort) from different types of exercise………..

There is very little difference.

Not enough to be bothered about.

When people bang on about the 72 hour ‘afterburn’ their workouts creates………

There is, the research shows, probably only 50-100 calories difference at most to any other ‘work matched’ workout.

And while there may be an element of difference in the body’s hormonal response to different types of workout………

Or differences in partitioning (where the energy comes from and goes to), in appetite levels and so on………..

The difference that creates, per workout, is a drop in the ocean compared to the impact of what we’re eating.

Where we aim to make our workouts the best they can be is………

Efficiency and enjoyment.

Our guys are in and out in 45 minutes.

Explanation, demos, warm up, session, finisher or game and cool down all done in three quarters of an hour.

Having done an amount of work and burnt an amount of calories that could take a lot longer with other options.

And was as enjoyable as we can make such things.

Maybe you could do the same amount of work a few minutes quicker elsewhere in theory.

But if you hated it and didn’t want to do it again, what’s the point.

Or if you the amount of coaching needed to be able to to do said workout in the first place far outweighed the time saving, again maybe not the best option.

We always say the best form of exerciser is;

1. One that takes your in the direction you want to go in

2. Is enjoyable (or, at least, tolerable) enough that you can see yourself doing it for the rest of you life

That will get you better results then any other form of exercise that touts itself to be “better”……….

But, when “work matched”, either isn’t or maybe is by a couple of percent………

That you don’t like!

Much love,

Jon ‘Game, Set’ Hall and Matt ‘Box Cars’ Nicholson

P.S. If you haven’t found that form of exercise you enjoy or find tolerable yet (and you like the sound of something that helps with the rest of it, rather than just more workouts), then it’s our find out more meeting on Wednesday –> myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting
