I mentioned yesterday that I was going to talk about weight and ‘health’.

‘Health’ is very much what FitPros sell nowadays.

10, 15 years ago it was about looking good on the beach / naked.

Now it’s mostly ‘health’.

You can’t really argue with health can you?

We ‘should’ all be healthier, no?

Can’t disagree with that.

But often health is used as justification for something else.

If someone wants to be stronger, that’s cool.

If they want rippling abs, they should go for it.

If they want to look as good as possible so they can sleep with as many members of the opposite sex as possible (or the same one as many times as possible) then more power to them –> myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting if you like the sound of that 😉

But the health card is usually played.

Is someone who’s carrying an extra 7-10lbs less healthy than the guy who posts selfies of his 5% body fat abs on Instagram?

Maybe.

Maybe not.

If he / she is wanting to show how healthy they are, surely a picture of some blood test results would be more effective then them with their shirt off?

Sure, carrying 50-100lbs (or more) of body fat will, all else being equal, be likely to reduce certain health markers.

But that’s a different conversation.

If you are carrying a ‘healthy’ level of body fat, you’re strong enough, fast enough, have sufficient endurance, etc, etc……..

Then is the FitPro with less body fat, a higher deadlift, a faster sprint, more unbroken burpees, etc, etc……….

More healthy than you?

Maybe.

Maybe not.

Ultimately, it’s your body.

Do with it as you wish.

If a doctor has given you cause to believe that you are doing something that’s risking your health……..

Then you may like to do something about it.

Or you might choose not to.

Your body.

If you want to look better with clothes off………

Or be stronger or have greater endurance (for whatever reason)………

Or a mixture of all the above and other reasons……..

Then go for it.

But know why you’re doing it.

And ignore the FitPro (or seemingly well meaning friend) who plays the ‘health’ card to justify their own approach.

Much love,

Jon ‘Getting my abs back at the moment. Not because I was unhealthy without. Because they look nice’ Hall and Matt ‘Enjoy lifting heavy stuff and it helps with my back’ Nicholson
