One of the most common things that people look to get from us is ‘motivation’.

“I just need you to motivate you” they might say.

If there’s one things I’ve learned after nearly 16 years in this game……..

It’s that you can’t motivate people.

And more and more proper studies (as opposed to just my own motivations) are backing this up.

Motivation needs to come from within.

What we aim to provide is an environment in which it is as easy as possible for someone’s own internal motivation to grow and be maintained.

In the same way as you can’t ‘force’ a plant to grow.

A good gardener will provide all the nutrients and everything else it needs to maximise the chance of good growth.

But the growth comes from within the plant itself.

What you can do to maximise your chances is the equivalent to checking yourself into a nursery.

Of the plant kind, not nursery kind, funnily enough.

Put yourself in a environment where you’re provided with said ‘nutrients’.

Whether that be joining somewhere like here, if you haven’t already (myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting).

Or, where possible, surrounding yourself with people who’ll support that growth in your personal or work life.

Or changing the physical environment at home and / or work (no crappy food out on display tempting you).

Over the next few days, I’m going to cover the three components of Self-Determination Theory (SDT).

And how it affects your motivation.

And, hopefully, it will help you realise where you motivation is being ‘thwarted’.

Much love,
