I put a post on Instagram the other day.

Of one of the sessions.

I got a comment.

“You need to put your phone away and correct some of those planks”

As there was few ‘bums in the air’.

Couple of things.

Firstly these guys were coming into or out of the plank.

Mid transition from kneeling.

But, regardless of that, it’s an example of something we see a lot from fellow Fit Pros.

Over-coaching.

Where any exercise that is being done any less than 100% perfectly is ‘corrected’.

The idea behind it makes sense.

People want to do things right.

I get that.

But, from our experience………

There’s an optimum level of coaching.

Different for every person.

Enough to help them improve in some area.

Not too much to discourage them.

A Goldilocks zone (most of what we do is Goldilocks – not too much, not little. Check myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting if you haven’t already and you’d like to find out more about that).

New people being constantly told they’re doing something ‘wrong’ get quickly dispirited.

“I can’t do this”.

If somebody’s not going to hurt themselves, but technique isn’t ‘perfect’……..

I’m happy to maybe give one little tweak…….

Sandwiched between some compliments and encouragement………

And come back to other adjustments later on.

Same with food.

If someone’s drinking more water and has dropped the mid morning cake / biscuits…….

Let’s celebrate that.

Even though there’s stuff that can be changed elsewhere in the future for ever greater results.

Over the years I’ve seen many people enthusiastically report what they’ve done to a PT………

Only to have the rest of their food choices, sleep, stress, drinking, etc completely ripped apart.

They leave somewhat crushed.

And often don’t come back.

Always remember that anything is better than nothing.

We can improve that ‘anything’ over time to get the best return for your effort.

But it’s not black or white.

It’s not “perfect” or “not worth doing”.

Just start taking some ‘forward steps’.

And we can turn that into a ‘jog’ over time 🙂

Much love,
