What do you do regularly?

You know, stuff you do a certain number of times most or all weeks.

You’ll work, commute, watch tele, check social media, cook, eat, socialise, maybe do school runs and more.

Why do you do these things?

You probably answer with some combination of the following:

– Want to

– Enjoy it

– Happy to do it for the benefits it brings

For any of them, did you say anything like;

“I use willpower to make myself do it” or

“I am motivated to do it”?

I doubt it.

We never (or rarely) talk about willpower and motivation for the stuff we do do.

So why do we seek it for stuff we’re not doing (or not doing as much as we feel we should)?

When you think about it, it doesn’t make sense, does it?

We never use something for things that are going well.

But we try and use it for things that aren’t.

Wouldn’t it make more sense to look at how and why we do do the things we do do?

And try and replicate that?

We, maybe, see them as non-negotiables that we just do because of the benefits.

We, perhaps, just plan them into our week in the way that makes the most sense.

We probably prioritise them over other stuff that’s less important to us.

We might accept that we can’t do them ‘perfectly’ but that the best we can do under the circumstances is always better than not doing them at all.

Willpower and motivation are over rated.

We don’t use them for what works.

So why try and use them for what isn’t?

Much love,

Jon Hall’power’

P.S. We’ve made our reputation (two time National Fitness Awards shortlisted) on helping people get results without having to rely on willpower and motivation. Check myrise.co.uk/briefing-meeting if you like the sound of that.
