I mentioned the other week that I’ve been recently on day’s training with my coach in Newcastle.

#### Remember, if someone who’s suggesting they coach you doesn’t have a coach / coaches themselves it means that either they have every aspect of their life absolutely flying (unlikely) or they don’t believe in coaching as much as they claim. ####

As part of the day a few of the guys on the programme spoke about their experiences on it.

One really made me think.

A former marine.

Big tough dude who’d served in, amongst other places, Helmand Province.

value of personal training

Looked like he could kill me with his pen in about 3 seconds.

Had to leave the military due to hearing loss from an IED exploding into his side.

He told us about some of the stuff he’d done in the marines.

Full on stuff it was.

But it was interesting to hear that what he’d struggled the most with was his return to Civvie Street.

Dealing with ‘normal’ people and everyday (for most) life.

“Why do you think that was?” he asked.

“Two reasons – training and being part of a group”

In the Marines he’d been trained for every eventuality he would face.

He knew exactly what to do and how to respond.

So it was (relatively) easy.

And by doing it in group he felt he was part of something.

Everyone supported everyone else and you all got dragged along with the collective momentum.

In real life he was by himself.

And there was no training.

You have to kinda figure it all out by yourself.

The programme gave him what he needed.

A form of training in how to get better at the things he struggled with (dealing with people mainly).

And the support and camaraderie of a group of like minded people.

The Value of Personal Training

It reminded me of what we do.

We train people.

Not just in the physical, workout sense.

But in how to do everything else that they kinda already know.

How to incorporate those things into their already busy and challenging lives.

How to consistently do the things they’ve struggled with.

On a long term, maintainable basis. That’s the value of personal training.

Like a lot of things in real life, we don’t think we need training on it.

We think we should be able to figure it out ourselves.

And we ‘can’.

But why waste all that time and effort doing it slowly?

Or finding it doesn’t actually happen?

When there are people that can help you do it more quickly and efficiently (Check RISE in Macclesfield’s informal, non-pushy have-a-look-around night if you like the sound of that)?

And make sure it does happen?

Much love,

Jon ‘Thomas’ Hall and Matt ‘Gordon’ Nicholson

P.S. Too easy for bonus points 😉
